Where to Start
Finding a starting point in a cluttered space
When it comes to organizing your home, it's best to start with a specific area or room rather than tackling the entire house all at once. This approach allows you to focus your efforts, maintain motivation, and see tangible progress.
Questions I like to ask my clients to figure out where to start:
What room gives you the most anxiety?
What room would benefit you the most?
Now when starting on your own, I recommend starting small and tackling a little at a time.
Never organized before? Start with a drawer, a small closet, the bathroom-a small space.
Here are some common areas to consider when starting your organizing journey:
Entryway/Mudroom: This is the first space you encounter when entering your home. Organizing it can help create a welcoming and functional area. Declutter coats, shoes, and accessories, and consider adding hooks, shoe racks, or storage baskets to keep things tidy.
Kitchen: The kitchen is often the heart of the home and tends to accumulate a lot of items. Start by decluttering countertops, cabinets, and drawers. Organize kitchen utensils, cookware, and pantry items, using storage containers and drawer dividers to maximize space.
Closet: Tackling your closet can be a rewarding experience. Sort through clothes, shoes, and accessories, and donate or sell items you no longer wear. Use hangers, shoe racks, and drawer organizers to maximize storage and keep everything in order.
Home Office: If you have a dedicated workspace, organizing it can enhance productivity. Sort through papers, files, and office supplies, and establish a filing system. Use desk organizers, cable management solutions, and storage bins to keep everything neat and accessible.
Bathroom: Bathrooms often accumulate toiletries, cosmetics, and towels. Start by decluttering expired products and items you no longer use. Utilize storage containers, drawer organizers, and shelves to keep essentials organized and easily accessible.
Bedroom: Create a serene and clutter-free bedroom by decluttering clothes, accessories, and personal items. Sort through your wardrobe and donate or discard items that no longer serve you. Use under-bed storage, closet organizers, and bedside tables to maintain order.
Remember, organization is an ongoing process, and it's important to maintain the systems you've established. Once you've successfully organized one area, move on to the next, gradually transforming your entire home into a well-organized haven.
